Corrigan's Mayfair

We had a set menu at Corrigan's for The Wine Advocate team. This is a very handsome restaurant in Mayfair, and everything we had was tasty and well-done. I would loved to have sampled a few other things, but since we all had the same menu, that was impossible. I certainly give Corrigan's high marks on its lamb and the salmon. As for the wines, the NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Rosé is always a safe choice and was, again, quite reliable, with lots of strawberry...

BÜ's Restaurant, Bar & Bütique

This was a fabulous restaurant, a real Swiss bistro, with abundant portions, an absolutely outrageous fine wine list, with terrific California selections and heavy on Rhône wines. The food was sensational, with one of the best Quiche Lorraine's I have ever eaten. In addition, they served possibly the finest Veal Cordon Bleu I have ever had - perfectly cooked veal stuffed with high-quality ham and several Swiss cheeses. It was sumptuous, rib-sticking and incredibly satisfying. The wines all hit the...

Benefit for the T. J. Martell Foundation

Michael Mina's Wit & Wisdom, Four Seasons Hotel This was my second meal at Wit & Wisdom, an attractive restaurant in the relatively new Four Season Hotel right on the harbor in downtown Baltimore. The first meal was disappointing, but famed chef Michael Mina's group has been managing this site, and the chef has changed. Even though this was a limited lunch, everything was delicious, from excellent hors d'oeuvres (which were surprisingly impressive), to the Chesapeake Bay oysters (I'm not...

Sapphire Grill

This casual restaurant is special, with a limited menu largely derived from what's available in the market, and had everything I like about a restaurant - nice ambience, a comfortable setting, an unpretentious yet attentive staff and an excellent wine list. My meal included delicious crab cakes and an excellent bouillabaisse that was generous and filled with aromas of saffron and seafood. The wines, which were provided by all the guests, were a diverse group, but included a number of...

Husk Restaurant

The food was innovative, very flavorful and I can't recommend it highly enough. But I had real problems with the wine list, which is one of those esoteric, hipster lists where some of the weirdest and most obscure and largely unpalatable wines are presented. That's interesting, as good as the food is, and they have a fabulous list of whiskeys, bourbons, as well as craft beers. We did manage to find a bottle of Alsatian Riesling and a Domain Weinbach,...

Little Saigon

This was another fine meal at this tiny Vietnamese restaurant located just to the west of Arlington, VA. Unpretentious, down to earth and casual, it's a great place to bring a couple of bottles, good friends and enjoy the evening....

José Andrés Luncheon at Home

This may have been one of the greatest lunches (all six hours of it) that I have ever experienced. When I consider what my favorite foods are - from fatty toro (tuna belly) to sea urchin (uni), beautifully aged, flavorful beef as well as iberico belotta (black ham) and, of course, caviar as well as suckling pig - this meal had it all. I can't express enough my appreciation for José Andrés' generosity for hosting a group of culinary enthusiasts...

Flagstaff House

Located on one of the best cycling roads/climbs in North American (Boulder is a mecca for professional cyclists), Flagstaff House lies roughly three kilometers up the steep, curvy and scenic Flagstaff Road, just outside of Boulder, Colorado. It has a slightly old school, traditional ambiance, yet the view overlooking the town of Boulder is stunning, the food is first-rate, and the wine list is spectacular....

Strip Steak

Benefit for Camillus House and My Neighbors Foundation This was a very impressive meal at the fashionable Strip Steak restaurant in the hip and cool Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. The quality of the food, the wine service and overall ambience were terrific. This dinner was held to benefit Camillus House in Miami Beach (which provides services to the homeless, including lodging) and a local charity in my neighborhood called My Neighbor's Foundation. We started with the only Gewurztraminer I've...
