Pizzeria Locale

Fashioned after a traditional Naples pizzeria, Pizzeria Locale is hands down the best pizza joint in Colorado. Run by the first-rate crew at Frasca (Which is located next door and arguably one of the top restaurants in the US today) and featuring a wood burning oven that hits over 1,000° Fahrenheit, they dish out spectacular food across the board with a bevy of brilliant appetizers and perfectly done pizzas that come out of the oven, bubbling and crispy, in all of a minute and a half. In addition, you also have access to the full wine list at Frasca, which is particularly deep in Italians, yet also has a good selection of Burgundies and Rhônes.

After starting with a delicious Pinot Blanco by the glass, we washed down the majority of the meal with a brilliant bottle of 2010 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A traditionally made blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the balance Syrah and Cinsault, it was backwards and tight when I tasted it at the domaine on release, yet showed even better on this evening and was loaded with black raspberry, garrigue and licorice as well as full-bodied richness and knockout length. It's another outstanding example from the 2010 vintage and readers should be thrilled to have multiple bottles in the cellar.

If you find yourself anywhere close to Boulder, CO, don't miss a chance to eat here.
