Lunch at L'Ami Louis, Paris, Paris

Meeting good friends from Baltimore for lunch at L'Ami Louis was a treat after seventeen days of hard work. The luncheon began with a beautiful bottle of the delicate yet flavorful 1995 Deutz Cuvée William Deutz, an underrated Champagne that deserves more recognition than it receives. That was followed by a sumptuous bottle of Domaine de la Janasse 2000 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Chaupin. This is a stunning, rich, full-bodied, pure, hedonistically as well as intellectually exhilarating wine. Although still young and primary, the 1999 Guigal Côte Rôtie Château d'Ampuis was spectacular, the finest example of this offering Guigal has yet produced. An inky blue/purple color is accompanied by gorgeous aromas of smoke, crème de cassis, and licorice. Extremely rich, full-bodied, and tannic, this is a wine to forget for another 4-6 years, and drink over the subsequent 12-15.
