Hilton Hotel Gala Hedonist's Dinner

This dinner was held the day Malaysian Air Flight 370 went missing (we arrived on a Malaysian Air Flight from Hong Kong during that time period, one of those coincidences in life that will never be forgotten). The food, prepared by the Kuala Lumpur Hotel Hilton's staff, was generally quite good, although I was inundated with the 300+ guests asking for autographs and/or wanting answers to their wine questions. Despite the interruptions, I did find the two vintages of Dominus...

Chez Dickinson - A charity dinner benefitting Camillus House in Miami, Florida

This was one of two special dinners held in Florida to benefit several charities, one being my local charity in northern Baltimore County, Maryland, My Neighbor’s Foundation, and the other the Camillus House in Miami. Both were organized by Bob Dickinson and his wife, Jodi, who have long been generous contributors to charitable events both in their hometown and throughout the United States. The objective of Camillus House is to eliminate homelessness in Miami. From all accounts, they may be...

1982 Bordeaux 30th Anniversary Gala Lunch

Benefitting the Navy SEAL Foundation This fund raiser arranged by Antonio Galloni and myself netted over $250,000 for the Navy SEAL Foundation, which supports the families of United States Navy SEALs. We even had some excess proceeds that Antonio Galloni and I divided between local charities we support. In my case, it was the Ron Smith Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I have been involved in many great events over my career, but this one made me...

Ray Signorello Charity Luncheon

I donated wines from my cellar for this charity luncheon held to benefit Meals on Wheels, which Daniel Boulud supports so generously. The luncheon was purchased by Ray Signorello of the well-known Signorello Winery in Napa Valley. He invited a bunch of his Canadian pals to this brilliant event. It is difficult to choose a favorite course, but the Spaghetti a la Guitarra with Alba white truffles was off the charts, as was the Turbot stuffed with cépes and lardons....

T. J. Martell Charity Luncheon

A boisterous group from the music business, in addition to the Baltimore Orioles’ Hall of Fame first baseman, Eddie Murray, made for a noisy, exuberant and fun-filled, decadent lunch experience at the nearby Oregon Grille. A collection of wines from all of our cellars resulted in a selection of extraordinary reds, whites and sparklers. One would normally assume that the French Champagnes would be my favorites, but I must say the Schramsberg Reserve 2001 in magnum stole the show. It is an...

Veritas: The Park B Smith Invitational

Park Smith’s annual Châteauneuf du Pape Invitational Lunch at his restaurant, Veritas, was one of my most memorable wine and food occasions over the last decade. His new Executive Chef, Sam Hazen, and Chef de Cuisine, Alexander Williamson, turned out a remarkable meal. Everything, the Kumamoto oysters, made from a sea water gelée with osetra caviar, the mind-blowing Toro tartare topped with Uni (sea urchin), roasted lobster, foie gras, and duck confit with beans from Tarbais, France, was to die...

Gala Black Tie Dinner Number 2

This was another brilliant meal from the master Korean chef with classic French training, Seo Song Ho. Some of his unreal dishes included the sea scallops with truffle slit in cabbage. It reminded me of a dish created by Daniel Boulud nearly 25 years ago. The steamed crab meat and tofu with angelhair sea grass sauce was pure classic Korean food that was a perfect foil for the 2010 Burge Family Semillon. The beef clear dumpling soup with a meringue top...

Gala Black Tie Dinner Number 1

Those of you who have read about my previous gala dinners at the Hotel Shilla prepared by their master, classically trained, Korean chef, Seo Song Ho, should realize this guy is pure genius. If he were working in New York City, Chicago, New Orleans or San Francisco, he would be considered a Michelin three-star quality chef. What he is doing with Korean ingredients, using classic French techniques, is remarkable. Both of the dinners he prepared that I attended on this...
