4 Wines from Valdarno di Sopra to Drink Now

Closing out her Tuscany wine region series, Monica Larner visits the historic, albeit lesser-known DOC Valdarno di Sopra in her final installment. “It is for sure the smallest if measured by the number of active producers,” she states. “It may be tiny in terms of its producer population, but its physical geographic area is not much smaller than Chianti Classico.” The Arno River is responsible for making this wine region thrive. “It provided the transportation necessary to make Valdarno an economic hub for wine trade and commerce,” Larner adds.

Noting that there are more, but not by much, Larner highlights four producers in her report. “The Ferragamo family’s Il Borro, the dynamic estate Il Carnasciale (with its own grape variety called Caberlot), Luca Sanjust’s Petrolo that makes a world-class Merlot called Galatrona, and Tenuta Sette Ponti owned by yet another important Italian wine protagonist Antonio Moretti.”

When choosing a wine from one of these producers, Larner suggests that, while they’re all excellent in their own right, readers should go for the top rated. Celebrate the wines of Valdarno di Sopra with these four stunners, all ranked 94 points or higher:
